Partenope is a woman named after her city. In Greek mythology, Partenope is a mermaid who killed herself after failing to bewitch Odysseus.
In the film, Partenope is the epitome of the city of Naples
Her body was carried by a flood to the site of today’s Castel dell’Ovo, and she gave her name to the city that would later become Naples, Napoli. Heat Written by Peter Gregson Starring Peter Gregson, Warren Zielinski, Magdalena Filipczak, Laurie Anderson, Ashok Klouda.
At first I was annoyed and sure that I wouldn’t make it to the end, but then the scene with the aging star caught my attention
After her humiliating speech in front of her “ex” fellow citizens and despite the sight of his bald head, Partenope listens to his “advice” and touches his face with great mercy. It was at that moment that I realized that the film is not about the beauty of some mythical mermaid, but about the beauty she sees in people beyond their appearance.
No, Partenope shows her superpower throughout her life and the examples are many: when she reads John Cheever, the alcoholic, the depressed, the miracle; when she passionately kisses a disfigured acting teacher
Furthermore, this does not happen after she loses her youth, as her teacher suggests – if that were the case, he would not have been able to impress her with his mediocre performance on the exam either. And since she is the personification of Naples, the human imperfections she sees are linked to the history of the city – to ignorance and poverty, to patriarchal oppression, to religiousness and superstition in the guise of violence.
Still, 8 out of 10 for feeling a little pretentious
All of this is shown in the most brutal and horrific scenes, but in Partenope those who embody them find understanding, acceptance and become miracles. You can’t be arrogant when you advocate embracing all souls.
